  For many years, I taught freshman composition courses at both the basic and "honors" levels. I still teach, but now I do so online.
Students who enter college often find that their writing skills do not measure up to the standards they encounter in freshman composition. In fact, they often lack basic skills and find the margins of their papers filled with "awk", "run-on", "frag" and other disagreeable comments.
In other words, many students enter college lacking basic writing skills.
